Dodge/Jefferson Counties Genealogical Society  (Affiliate Event)
7:00 pm - Watertown Senior & Community Center, 514 S First Street, Watertown
Presented by Lyle Lidholm - Web: http://www.dodgejeffgen.com/
Lyle Lidholm of Watertown will be speaking on antique tools and early construction methods of our ancestors who settled in this area.  Lyle is currently involved in the restoration of the Mason log home at Dorothy Carnes (Jefferson) County Park.

BACKGROUND:
The Jefferson County Parks Department is spearheading the restoration and preservation of the Mason log home at Dorothy Carnes County Park.  Last year the home was disassembled, inventoried, photographed and labeled, and it now is being stored in a secure building.

But the work has just begun.  Plans called for refabricating sections of the walls, which had been cut away during various remodeling of the farmhouse.
The log home is located on property added to the east side of Dorothy Carnes County Park in the Town of Jefferson, just west of Fort Atkinson.  The 160-year-old homestead was discovered in 2004, preserved by a farmhouse that had been built around it.  Following restoration, it initially will be used as an educational museum.

The Mason farm's history dates back to 1836 when the Rock River Land and Claim Company was founded in Milwaukee by Dwight Foster, Milo Jones, Solomon Juneau and Sylvester Pettibone.  Pettibone was married to Ansenath Mason, daughter of Elias Mason.

In 1847, Elias Mason; his second wife, Lois Fiske Mason, and their three children followed the path blazed by Elias' older children, Edwy, John, Deliverance, Ansenath, Royal and Betsy, and moved to Jefferson County, Wis.  Interestingly, it was Lois who initially bought the land outright, in 1850.  It's believed that the house was built between 1850 and 1854.

The Masons were not the first family to own the property.  A gentleman by the name of Basket was the first to buy the land; however, he never lived on the land or even in the state.

The Masons worked with the Rock River Land and Claim Company, which developed properties with the settlers such as the original Milo Jones. The Rock River Land and Claim Company was founded in Milwaukee in 1836 by Dwight Foster, Jones, Solomon Juneau and Sylvester Pettibone. Pettibone was married to Ansenath Mason, daughter of Elias Mason.
The Masons lived on the property until 1870, when Jeremiah Mason sold the property to a family by the name of Gross.

Lifewriting: Sharing Your Own Stories for Your Family, without being a good writer  (Affiliate Event)
7:00 pm to 9:00 pm - Gateway Building, 496 McCanna Parkway, Burlington
Presented by Judy Rockwell - Web: www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~wiburlgs/
The Lifewriting workshop reminds us “You are on your family tree, too,” noted Rockwell.  “We often forget that our own personal stories are as important to our families as are our ancestors' stories.”

The workshop will include an overview of materials to help you write your own, and your family stories.  A sample, informal writing exercise that records an element of one’s own story will set the pace.  Optional sharing of a few examples then inspires additional ways to extend your own details and inspires more memories.

Participants are asked to bring a photo, or two, from their past to use in part of the writing exercise. The photo can be a snapshot (not a portrait) with some details in addition to the people, recent or from the past. The photo can be from an event, family gathering, holiday, vacation, doing something in your house or outside of your house.

“You don’t have to be a great or even "good" writer to work on your memoirs and family history, you just have to be interested in chronicling these valuable stories for all time,” said Rockwell.

Judy Rockwell is a retired reference librarian. She started a Lifewriting group at Burlington Public Library which is open to the public and meets two times per month.  She is past president of Burlington Genealogical Society, current BGS librarian for genealogy resources at the Burlington Wisconsin Public Library, and a dedicated family genealogist.
