IMPORTANT LEGISLATIVE ACTION ALERT!

ATTENTION WSGS MEMBERS WHO ARE WISCONSIN RESIDENTS!

The WSGS office received this e-mail message today from Terry Thiessen, President of the Wisconsin Council for Local History (WCLH):

"Call to Action for Wisconsin Council for Local History

"The Joint Committee on Finance version of the Wisconsin biennial budget has been approved, and the Legislature’s budget will be sent to the Governor in the coming weeks.  It contains a motion to delete 7 positions from the Historical Society (Motion 45), which we oppose.  We have sent a letter, attached, to the Governor and the Legislature and are actively lobbying leadership members in both houses.

"The Historical Society’s Ability and Obligation to Service the Public is at Risk:
  • The 7 jobs contained in the Motion are critical to our mission as the state’s archives and our obligation to preserve the historical collections of the state.
  • The Society has a mandate to collect the historical record of Wisconsin’s governance and operation, which cannot be accomplished if Motion 45 stays in the budget.
  • The Society cannot maintain and operate as the University of Wisconsin’s North American Library effectively per our mission to serve faculty and students.
  • Motion 45 could result in a layoff of current employees who are critical to the Society’s core programs and operations.
"PLEASE DO THE FOLLOWING:

"I.  Contact the Governor and let him know that Motion 45 must be vetoed.  Call and/or Email the Governor

"Office of the Governor: 1-608-266-1212
                Governor:  govgeneral@wisconsin.gov

"II. Contact your Legislators and let them know that Motion 45 must be removed from the budget bill.  Call and/or Email your Senator and Representative.

"Find your specific legislators contact information at:

If you are a Wisconsin resident, please contact the Governor's office, as well as your local State Representative and Senator, to let them know that you oppose these staffing cuts at the Wisconsin Historical Society as soon as possible.  Please reference the facts given in the WCLH letter, but try to personalize your message to emphasize the important work that these positions do which has benefitted you in your genealogical and historical research.

Thank you!
