In the fall of 1941 word came to the Sauk Prairie that this was to be the site of the largest ammunition plant in the world. The farmers whose farms were to be taken, organized to protest and implore the Government to consider other suitable sites and spare this area of some of the best farm land in the state of Wisconsin. Their efforts were for nothing as the decision had been made and was not going to be changed. By March 1, 1942 the farmers had left their farms, and construction went into full swing, 7 days a week, 24 hours a day. Ten months later the first production area went into operation.
The Tuscania was carrying American troops to Europe during World War One when it was torpedoed by a German U-boat. It sank within hours. Thanks to the bravery of the British Royal Navy and the compassion of a Scottish island community, over 1,800 American soldiers survived.
The long-overdue memorial to this event will be loacted inside the main entrance of Baraboo High School in Baraboo, Wisconsin. The National Tuscania Memorial will honor the hundreds of brave American doughboys, rescuers, and survivors of the Tuscania disaster. The bronze relief memorial will be unveiled on Sunday, November 11, 2018, a century after the end of World War One. The National Tuscania Memorial unveiling in Baraboo will also coincide with the national World War One memorial unveiling in Washington, D.C.
Includes newspapers from Baraboo, Madison, Mount Horeb, Portage and Reedsburg, and various Wisconsin-based magazines.
